Chapter 19 Outline

Darwin and Evolution

This chapter is divided into two parts. The first part is a consideration of Darwin's contribution and his formulation of a mechanism of evolution by natural selection. The second part discusses evidences for evolution.

Chapter Outline

In this chapter outline, the learning objectives and the selected key terms are given for each major head in the chapter.

The World Was Ready (p. 295)

1. Show that scientific world views were beginning to change during the eighteenth
century.
2. Contrast the prevalent pre-Darwinian views with post-Darwinian
views.
3. Describe the catastrophe hypothesis of Cuvier.
4. Describe Lamarck's theory of evolution, and tell which aspects of his theory were
incorrect.
Selected Key Terms: evolution, paleontology, catastrophism, inheritance of acquired
characteristics

Darwin Develops a Theory (p. 297)

5. Describe Charles Darwin's background and the path of the voyage of the
HMS Beagle.
6. Explain how the study of geology and fossils influenced Darwin's
thinking.
7. Explain how the study of biogeography influenced Darwin's thinking.
8. Describe natural selection as a process that results in adaptation to the
environment.
biogeography, natural selection, fitness, adaptation

Evidences Accumulate (p. 304)

9. Explain how the fossil record, biogeography, comparative anatomy, comparative
embryology, and comparative biochemistry support a hypothesis of common
descent.
homologous structure, vestigial structure
