Chapter 52 Outline
Environmental Concerns
Environmental concerns include air pollution, global
warming, the ozone shield, water pollution, and land degradation
by humans. The possibility of a sustainable world is also covered
in this chapter.
Chapter Outline
In this chapter outline, the learning objectives
and the selected key terms are given for each major head in the
chapter.
Air Pollutants Interact (p. 892)
1. List the substances that contribute to air pollution; note their sources and
associate each one with acid deposition, global warming, the destruction of the ozone
shield, or the development of photochemical smog.
2. List the environmental effects of global warming, and tell what can be done
to prevent global warming.
3. Explain how greenhouse gases bring about global warming, how chlorofluorocarbons break down the ozone shield, and how smog develops.
Selected Key Terms: pollutant, greenhouse effect, ozone shield, acid deposition, photochemical smog, thermal inversion
Water Pollutants Spoil Drinking Water (p. 896)
4. Explain why we may be running out of fresh water.
5. Give reasons why underground water supplies are being polluted, and tell how
the ocean becomes polluted.
aquifer
How People Degrade Land (p. 899)
6. List ways in which quality of the land is being degraded today.
7. Using DDT as an example, explain how biomagnification occurs.
8. Discuss the adverse effects of forest destruction and a loss of biodiversity.
biological magnification, desertification
A Sustainable World Is Possible (p. 902)
9. Compare the environmental impact of more developed and less developed countries.
10. Discuss the concept of a sustainable world.
