Chapter 9 Outline

Cellular Respiration

Cellular respiration includes glycolysis and fermentation which are anaerobic, and aerobic respiration which occurs in mitochondria. The concept of the metabolic pool is also included.

Chapter Outline

In this chapter outline, the learning objectives and the selected key terms are given for each major head in the chapter.

How Cells Acquire ATP (p. 139)

1. Describe the general function of cellular respiration.
Selected Key Terms: cellular respiration, aerobic

Glycolysis and Fermentation Are Anaerobic (p.140)

2. Describe both the anaerobic and the aerobic fate of pyruvate.
3. Discuss glycolysis, explaining the process of substrate-level phosphorylation and
noting the inputs and outputs of the pathway.
4. Describe lactate fermentation and alcoholic fermentation; note the physiological
significance of the fermentation process.
substrate-level phosphorylation, glycolysis, pyruvate, fermentation, oxygen debt

Aerobic Respiration Occurs in Mitochondria (p.144)

5. Discuss the transition reaction, explain the role of acetyl-CoA, and list the inputs and
outputs of the reaction.
6. Discuss the Krebs cycle, explain how it cycles, and list the inputs and outputs of the
cycle.
7. Discuss the electron transport system and its contribution to the formation of ATP.
8. Describe the arrangement of protein complexes in the inner membrane of
mitochondria, and explain the process of chemiosmotic ATP synthesis.
aerobic respiration, transition reaction, acetyl-CoA, Krebs cycle, electron transport
system, oxidative phosphorylation

Calculating the Energy Yield from Glucose Metabolism (p. 148)

9. Calculate the yield of ATP molecules per glucose molecule for glycolysis and cellular
respiration.

Metabolic Pathways Are Interrelated (p. 149)

10. Discuss the concept of a metabolic pool and how the breakdown of carbohydrate,
protein, and fat contributes to the pool.
