Chapter 11 - Cell Reproduction: Meiosis

Lecture Enrichment Ideas

1. Discuss the differences in sexual and asexual reproduction, and explain why even those organisms that usually reproduce asexually would go through sexual reproduction occasionally to provide genetic recombination.

2. Consider the advantages of sexual reproduction in evolution and discuss whether evolution would be expected to occur in asexually reproducing organisms (yes, by mutation).

3. Discuss the advantages of a mainly diploid life cycle (e.g., animals) and of a mainly haploid life cycle (e.g., fungi and some algae).

4. Consider why oogenesis and spermatogenesis would have such different kinds of cell products. Explain why there would be only one functional gamete from the female and four from the male.
