Lecture Enrichment Ideas

1. Discuss the similarities between the protostomes and deuterostomes presence of a coelom, tube-within-a-tube body plan, mesoderm, etc.

2. Examine the different adaptations of the mollusk body plan, and compare the body parts that differ within the groups. Discuss how these body parts differ from those of an annelid or an arthropod.

3. Discuss the presence of sensory receptors in the head in some annelids, their absence in the earthworm, and what this implies about the environments in which these worms live.

4. Discuss why the insects are so successful on land and why there are so many different species of insects.

5. Discuss the development of the chordates from ancestral invertebrates, through the invertebrate chordates, to the vertebrates.
