Discussion Ideas - Chapter 24
This chapter concerns population growth and modern
ecological concerns about land, water, and air pollution. Population
growth is explained in general terms before the history of population
growth in more-developed and less-developed countries is reviewed.
On land, problems arise due to soil erosion, tropical rain forest
destruction, and hazardous waste disposal. Biological magnification
is discussed in relation to hazardous wastes. Surface waters,
groundwater, and oceans are all being polluted. Smog, acid deposition,
global warming, and destruction of the ozone shield are all associated
with air pollution. The Ecology Focus suggests ways that we can
lessen our impact on the environment.
