It is known that the brains of people with Alzheimers disease contain fragments of amyloid, a normal nerve cell protein. How this protein becomes fragmented and whether the fragments are responsible for killing brain cells or the debris left behind after brain cells die is still unknown, but amyloid fragments have been shown to kill nerve cells in laboratory experiments.
