Peripheral nervous system (PNS) compared to central nervous system (CNS). The CNS contains the brain and the spinal cord, and the PNS contains the nerves. There are both cranial and spinal nerves within the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. The nerves of the autonomic nervous system belong to either the sympathetic system or the parasympathetic system.
