Darwin, C. R. The Origin of Species. New York: The Modern Library, 1993. One of the most important books of all time. Darwin's long essay is still comprehensible and interesting to modern readers.

Darwin, C. R. Voyage of the Beagle. New York: Penguin Putnam Inc., 1839 (reprint 1989). Darwin's own account of his observations and adventures during the famous five-year voyage.

Flannery, T. Throwim Way Leg. New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, 1998. A funny, irreverently delightful account of field research in New Guinea by a world expert on tree-kangaroos. Does a great job of conveying the fun and excitement of field research.

Goldschmidt, T. Darwin's Dreampond. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1998. The story of a Dutch fish taxonomist who happened to be working on Lake Victoria when the colorful cichlids he was classifying were driven to extinction. A beautifully written tragedy.

Grant, P. "Natural Selection and Darwin's Finches." Scientific American, October 1991, 82-87. In the Galápagos, finches evolve very rapidly, often altered by a single season of drought.

Jones, S. Darwin's Ghost: The Origin of Species Updated. New York: Random House, 2000. A modern look at Darwin's book, Steve Jones applies the theories of evolution and natural selection to today's world.

National Academy of Sciences. Teaching about Evolution and the Nature of Science. Washington, DC: National Academy Press, 1998. The National Academy's guide to instructors that outlines the need for evolution in the education system and that answers many commonly asked questions.

Quammen, D. The Song of the Dodo. New York: Scribner, 1996. A marvelous account of island biogeography, with a vivid and detailed portrait of Alfred Russel Wallace and his work in Malaysia.
