Atkins, P. W. Molecules. New York: Scientific American Library, 1987. A delightful journey among important molecules.

Goodsell, D. Our Molecular Nature: The Body's Motors, Machines, and Messages. New York: Springer-Verlag, 1996. A close look at some of the simple molecules that run our daily life and affect our health.

Holzman, D. "Protein Folding." American Scientist, May-June 1994, 267-74. An insightful discussion of protein-folding mechanisms and the impact they have on biology in general.

Hopkin, K. "The Post-Genome Project." Scientific American, August 2001, 16. This article explores proteomics and the impact that the human proteome could have on science.

Hoyle, F. The Ten Faces of the Universe. San Francisco: Freeman, Cooper, and Company, 1980. A readable account of how the universe is thought to have formed, written for the nonscientist.

Karow, J. "Interview with Roderick MacKinnon." Scientific American, May 2000. This interview tells the story of the researcher who discovered the structure of the potassium ion channel.

Loewenstein, W. The Touchstone of Life: Molecular Information, Cell Communication, and the Foundations of Life. New York: Oxford University Press, 1999. A wonderful look at the molecules that are essential in the day to day communication of a cell.

McKay, D., and others. "Search for Past Life on Mars: Possible Relic Biogenic Activity in Martian Meteorite ALH84001." Science 273 (August 1996):924-30. A meteorite has yielded evidence-but not proof-of ancient life on Mars. The claim has excited scientists, although many remain skeptical.

Mertz, W. "The Essential Trace Elements." Science 213 (1981):1332-38. An account of the roles of rare elements in human metabolism and the effects of their absences.

Politzer, B. "Sweet Talk: Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners." American Health, September 1991, 40-42. Although principally a discussion of sugars and artificial sweeteners as nutritional evils, this article presents a nice comparison of the major kinds of artificial sweeteners now available.

Trefil, J. "Nitrogen." Smithsonian, October 1997. Explores the significance of this element to all life on this planet.

Tyson, J. L. "Scientists to Turn High Beam on Molecules." Christian Science Monitor, March 2, 1994, 14. A very readable discussion of the Advanced Photon Sources project underway at the Argonne National Laboratory.
