Many of the features of modern suburbs feature designs of Howard and his chief architect, Raymond Unwin. Unfortunately, they do not usually include the total community design envisioned by these pioneers.

Kropotkin, P. 1913. Fields, Factories and Workshops or Industry Combined with Agriculture and Brainwork with Manual Work. Rev. ed. London: G. P. Putnam's Sons. First published in Boston, 1899. Sociological and economic intelligence of the first order founded on Kropotkin's specialized competence as a geographer and his passion as a communist anarchist. Especially emphasizes planning for undeveloped areas.

Kunstler, J. H. 1993. The Geography of Nowhere. New York: Simon & Schuster. A scathing indictment of modern suburbs.

Le Corbusier. 1924. Urbanisme. Paris: Translated by The City of Tomorrow and Its Planning (New York: Dover Press, 1930). Suggestions for a mechanical metropolis with widely spaced skyscrapers and multiple-decked traffic ways. One of the most influential books of its generation.

McHarg, I. 1969. Design with Nature. Philadelphia: Natural History Press. A classic of landscape architecture that pioneered a holistic approach and consideration of natural features in urban design.
