The text has been updated and sometimes rewritten to be as current as possible, with references also updated.
Many review questions have been rewritten to provoke thought and reduce emphasis on rote memorization.
To explain the concept of evolution visually, full-color cladograms are now correlated to attractive, full-color illustrations containing icons representative of specific animal groups.
The Origin of Life and Geologic Time Table, which appears at the back of the book, has been revised and now appears in full color.
NEW Internet links appear at ends of all survey chapters. Students can visit the text’s companion web site to find the hot links for each of the descriptions.
Boxed notes appear throughout the chapters to augment the text material and offer interesting sidelights without interrupting the narrative. Many of these have been revised from the previous edition.
Specific changes to the chapters include:

The vertebrate chapters are thoroughly updated, and many fine new color photographs were chosen to replace existing illustrations.
In chapter 4 (Protista), a new note mentions Toxoplasma as an opportunistic infection in AIDS; the importance of Cryptosporidium as a global diarrheal infection, important in AIDS patients; and the newly emerging disease caused by Cyclospora.
In chapter 7 (Acoelomate Animals), a table is included that shows the important trematode parasites of humans.
In chapter 8 (Pseudoelomate Animals), Trichinella coverage is revised and a paragraph has been added on dog heartworm.
In chapter 9 (Molluscs), the classification of gastropods has been revised.
In chapter 11 (Arthropods), the section on arthropod phylogeny has been revised, giving more emphasis to insects and including a new cladogram. Also added in this chapter are many fine photographs of insects by photographer Jim Castner.
In chapter 12 (Lesser Protostomes and Lophophorates), a number of new illustrations are added or substituted.
In chapter 13 (Echinoderms, Hemichordates, and Chaetognaths), the title and content have been revised because of the current uncertainty regarding the position of the chaetognaths.
In chapter 14 (Chordates), a new section was added on conodonts.
In chapter 15 (Fishes), the sections on elasmobranch biology and fish reproduction and growth have been revised, and a new shark illustration has been added.
In chapter 16 (Early Tetrapods and Modern Amphibians), a new illustration has been added that shows the evolution of the tetrapod limb.
In chapter 17 (Reptiles), a discussion and brief description of worm lizards has been added; a new essay and illustration on dinosaurs is added; and new illustrations of reptile skin and the amniotic egg are added.
In chapter 18 (Birds), parts of the section on digestion are rewritten, and several illustrations are redrawn.
In chapter 19 (Mammals), we’ve transferred the discussion of human evolution to this chapter for better narrative flow, and because the discussion is more appropriate here.
