New to this Edition

  1. The text has been updated and sometimes rewritten to be as current as possible, with references also updated.
  2. Many review questions have been rewritten to provoke thought and reduce emphasis on rote memorization.
  3. To explain the concept of evolution visually, full-color cladograms are now correlated to attractive, full-color illustrations containing icons representative of specific animal groups.
  4. The Origin of Life and Geologic Time Table, which appears at the back of the book, has been revised and now appears in full color.
  5. NEW Internet links appear at ends of all survey chapters. Students can visit the text’s companion web site to find the hot links for each of the descriptions.
  6. Boxed notes appear throughout the chapters to augment the text material and offer interesting sidelights without interrupting the narrative. Many of these have been revised from the previous edition.
