Cool Websites and a Little Humor

You were expecting to see some Finance websites listed weren't you? Well, guess again. Since you are here, you are undoubtedly a heavy PC-user. And, I'm guessing that, like every other PC user, you've been close to throwing the damn thing out the window at some point or another. Well, the August issue of Smart Money magazine lists some ***free*** PC-support websites where you and I can ask questions and get responses from expert volunteers at no cost.

Below are the websites and descriptive excerpts from the article.

"No Wonder! (www.nowonder.com) was set up by Internet users for Internet users and is staffed by 800 volunteers. Send in your question and someone will respond in 24 hours or less." (I should tell you that I sent a Microsoft Word question in that involved an unusual program glitch, and received an answer in less than 12(!) hours. Problem solved!)

"Or try Tech Support Guy (www.helponthe.net) where you post your questions on a message board and other users get back to you with a possible fix."

"When you register at Experts Exchange (www.experts-exchange.com) you get 200 points to spend on questions. Each question costs a minimum of 50 points. The experts treat answering questions like a competition and rank themselves accordingly . . . [i]f your expert fails to solve the problem, you lose no points and can consult another one."

Finally, here's a bit of Finance-related humor from a recent column in Forbes:

"Profits are a good thing, or were anyway, until four years ago-on August 9, 1995. That was the day Netscape sailed its IPO, based on numbers bracketed by parentheses. But who was to know? Despite the red ink, Netscape set a then-record on the Nasdaq of $2.2 billion for its end-of-first-day market cap. On the same day Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead's lead guitarist, suffered a fatal heart attack. The joke on the Net the next morning was that Garcia's final chest-clutching gasp was: "Netscape closed at what?"

Cue rim shot.
