"Shaping up for the club"

The Economist, November 24, 2001

Synopsis:
The closing case of Chapter 7 discusses several risks associated with investment in Russia. This article explains how the risks may be changed as Russia considers joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). As China and Taiwan recently joined the club, Russia is now one of only a few big countries outside the WTO. With the terrorist attacks that changed the political climate, the U.S. may find it necessary to help Russia to join the club. However, this article also explains why Russia's aim of joining by the end of next year sill looks very ambitious. Indeed, the merits of membership are perceived very differently by the groups in Russia depending on how they are well prepared for the competitions from outside. Depending on industry sectors, western companies inside Russia also perceive the merits membership in many different ways.
