"Weakening the Yen Won't Make Japan Strong"

Business Week, December 31, 2001

Synopsis:
Using the example of Japanese Yen and Japan Airlines, the opening case of Chapter 9 explains how the exchange rate movements may alter opportunities and threats in international business. This article provides an update of the case by discussing whether a weak-yen strategy may help Japan to get out of its 10-year slump. This article argues that the strategy may not work for many reasons. This article also discusses how other Asian countries may react to a weak-yen strategy.
