"EU welcomes new U.S. plan on hormone-free beef"
Reuters, August 24, 1999.

Synopsis:
Since 1989 the European Union (EU) has banned the importation of "hormone-treated" beef over fears that it may cause cancer. Recently, more attention has been given to "hormone-free" beef. In April, the EU threatened to also ban hormone-free beef from the U.S. after its scientists found traces of hormones in supposedly hormone-free U.S. beef. After the announcement in July to voluntarily suspend shipments of hormone-free beef to the EU, the U.S. Agricultural Department recently set a plan to allow the meat industry to resume the shipments. The EU welcomes the new plan but it is not the end of story. Following a WTO ruling, the U.S. imposed $116.8 million in punitive duties on EU goods in retaliation for the EU's hormone ban.
