Case Updates

"The Big Grab" Business Week, January 24, 2000, pp. 130-131.

Synopsis:
The opening case in chapter 8 describes the mergers that had occurred in the European insurance industry up to the early 1998.

This article reports the wave of domestic and cross-border mergers in Europe that continues to sweep this year through other industries including telecommunication, auto, utility, banking, and pharmaceutical. The deregulation and the desire to fill holes in the technology-based industries, coupled with the use of a single currency across the euro zone, have led many companies to regard mergers as a way to survive in the bordereless competitions. This article also forecasts some big deals to occur.
