"Fortress Russia: Should the West be afraid?" Business Week, December 27th, 1999, p. 74.

Synopsis:
The closing case in chapter 7 describes the privatization in Russia and its impact on foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Russian oil and gas industry. This article explains the recent movement in Russia, "deprivatization," which could kill investment and damage Russian and foreign companies alike. An aggressive, state-directed industrial policy, coupled with Russian nationalism, is protecting Russian industry through subsidies or trade barriers. Foreign investors are worried about Fortress Russia, which might lead Russia to take another economic step backward. This article is also in a good contrast with the opening case in Chapter 2 that describes the accelerating process of privatization in Brazil.
