"America's taxing trade troubles"

The Economist, August 21, 2001

Synopsis:
The opening case of chapter 5 describes the role of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the trade dispute between European Union (EU) and the U.S. over hormone-treated beef. This article provides an update of the role of the WTO, focusing on the trade dispute over foreign sales corporations (FSCs). The WTO's decision to treat FSCs as illegal trade subsidies may trigger another confrontation between the world's two largest trading blocks. The dispute won't simply fade away, but as this article explains a confrontation would be postponed by several reasons.
