Internet Applications for Global Managers

  • Search several stock exchange web sites on the internet for one or more firms that has cross listed shareholdings (e.g. the New York Stock Exchange www.nyse.com, the London Stock Exchange www.londonstockex.co.uk/, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange www.tse.or.jp/eindex.html). SmithKline, for example, has stock listed in Japan, the US, and London. Then look into the stock in more detail, and find out how much stock is offered where as well as the return it is generating. You might also find it interesting to look at how the stock prices move, or do not move, simultaneously in each market.

  • A variant of this is to more generally look at the foreign debt offerings of a domestic firm. This can be a little more difficult, and may require access to databases will full text financial statement disclosures. Look at when the debt was offered, at what interest rate, and then see how exchange rates have effected the effective interest rate over time. Some firms give rather full footnote disclosure of such information.
