Closing Case Global HRM at Colgate-Palmolive, Co. Website http://www.colgate.com Case Discussion Questions
Internet Exploration Question This case focuses on a program that Colgate-Palmolive has developed to recruit and train college graduates to be successful managers in the company's overseas markets. The program, which was started in the late 1980s, is an effort to provide extensive training to new recruits and other young managers to prepare them for assignments in foreign countries. The trainees spend 24 months in an U.S. based program, learning everything from trade secrets for marketing toothpaste overseas to foreign language skills. When they have completed the program, they are typically sent to a country other than their country of origin to being their management career. In the initial stages of selecting managers or trainees for overseas assignments, one thing that is important to companies like Colgate-Palmolive is make an initial assessment of whether the manager or trainee has the personality disposition to be an expatriate manager. Integrates Resources Group (IRG) is a company that provides expatriate related services to others companies. IRG has a survey that is available online that provides a partial assessment of an individual's suitability to be an expatriate manager. The survey is available at {http://www.expat-repat.com/} (follow the link labeled "Resources Available to Exporters" and select "Skills that Make a Difference"). Take the test. After you have completed the test, answer the following two question. First, did the test confirm or refute your own impression of your suitability to be an expatriate manager? Explain your answer. Second, were you surprised by the "three most important" attributes of an expatriate manager identified through the quiz? Why or why not? |
