"The challenge from up north"

The Economist, March 15, 2001

Synopsis:

The rise of Chin's economic power poses a challenge to its neighbors, South-East Asian countries. China has hosted most of Asia-oriented direct investments, which not only hampers the recovery of the South-East countries but also deprives them of much-need technology and outside skills. This article suggests three areas of reforms that South-East Asian governments should consider; (1) putting more emphasis on clean governance, transparency and legal predictability, (2) resuming their earlier efforts to lower trade barriers, and (3) upgrading South-East Asia's domestic capital markets.
