"The Decline of the Maquiladora"

Business Week, April 1, 2002.

Synopsis:
The maquiladora industry has helped Mexico achieve the double-digit growth in output through the late 1990s. As this article explains, however, the maquiladoras are in trouble for many reasons including the removal of the tax and tariff exemptions as well as the strong peso and the economic slowdown in the U.S. This article also explains why the Mexican government refuses to rush to the rescue despite the loss of maquiladora jobs and investment.
