"From the earth to the sky" Economist, September 11-17, 1999

Synopsis:
One of the features of the foreign exchange market is that the market never sleeps. In addition to the world's major foreign-exchange markets in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan, there are minor centers that are located in other areas including Sydney, which leads the foreign exchange market to operate 24 hours a day.

This article discusses how the Sydney Futures Exchange (SFE) is seeking respect as a global center for futures market. The SFE, Asia's biggest financial futures market, is going to catch up Chicago which has dominated commodity futures. By going fully electronic and by being a regional financial hub, the SFE expects to become a more efficient futures market. This article also explains how the SFE could be a trading hub for new sorts of future contracts.
