"East
Asia's new shape"
The
Economist, April 29th- May 5th, 2000, p.17.
Synopsis:
According to the Asian Development
Bank report, East Asia's economies have bounced back impressively quickly. The
rapid recovery is expected to continue this and next years.
This article argues that the rapid
recovery has left East Asia essentially unchanged in many aspects. The old
family conglomerates remain as they were in the past; government policies are
changing very slowly; structural reform especially in financial regulation has
neither been dramatic nor thorough enough. In contrast, the most significant
and real changes are happening in corporate behavior, which is driven by the
need for equity financing coupled with greater pressures on management.
