"Remaking Nissan"
Business Week, November 15th, 1999, pp. 70-76.
Synopsis:
This article explains how Carlos Ghosn, the Nissan Motor Co.'s new foreign chief operating officer, is reshaping the company. After taking the driver's seat, the executive dispatched from French carmaker Renault tries to remedy Nissan's flaws that have become frighteningly clear. To achieve the goal, he goes completely against Japanese corporate practices. For example, he wants all promotions based on performance, not on seniority or personal loyalties. Thus, the gaijin's management style not only challenges the Nissan culture but also symbolizes the fight over Corporate Japan's soul.
