Chapter 15

Weinberg, Neil (1996), "Garlic and Licorice, anyone?" Forbes, November 18, Vol. 158, Pg. 47-48.

This article profiles Amway Japan. In a market that has traditionally been extremely difficult to penetrate Amway has made rapid strides and is reported to have had a banner year with revenues of $1.9 Billion, net profit of $251 Million and ROE of 40%. This success has been attributed to Amway’s mastery in transforming an inefficient retail distribution system from a barrier to a strength. The company is reported to have provided consumers with an alternate mechanism to shop – by mail, and home visits by its independent distributors. It is reported that many Japanese electronic makers are seeking Amway’s help in distributing their products.

Kessler, Andrews, J. (1996), "Software that pays for itself," Forbes, October 21, Vol. 158, Pg. 294.

This article recognizes that today’s environment presents opportunities to enhance productivity while reducing costs with wisely purchased technology. People, distribution, and the distribution of people are identified as the areas where savings may be garnered. The article profiles Federal Express and Edify as organizations that have been able to buy software to garner the above mentioned savings.
