Merchant wholesaler -- A wholesaler that is independent of producers, taking title to the products they handle. The types of merchant wholesalers include:

  • Rack Jobber -- A wholesaler that performs most distribution functions in addition to providing and stocking racks for merchandise.

  • Cash-and-Carry Wholesaler -- One that carries a limited selection of products and does not transport those products.

  • Drop Shipper -- A wholesaler that takes title to products but does not handle physical distribution.

  • Trucker Jobber -- A wholesaler that operates a small warehouse and trucks that carry goods to retailers.

  • Manufacturers' Wholesalers -- Producers may set up their own wholesaling operation, such as sales or branch offices.

  • Brokers and Agents -- Intermediaries that bring together the producer and the customer in a sales arrangement.
