Chapter 16

Moukheilber, Zina (1997), "Plus ca Change (traditional retailers vs. the Internet)," Forbes, February 10,

V. 159, Pg. 46-47.

This article discusses the future of Internet shopping while drawing on the experience of catalog marketers. The author believes that just like the catalog experience there is a lot of hype surrounding the potential of Internet sales. Internet sales are purported to grow as the computer-trained younger generation comes of age but the traditional feel-the-merchandise shopping is anticipated to remain dominant.

Martin, Justin (1996), "The Man Who Boogied Away A Billion," Fortune, December 23, V. 134,

Pg. 89-91 +.

This article chronicles the rise and ultimate demise of a retail clothing empire "Merry-Go-Round" Enterprises. Beginning modestly "Merry-Go-Round’ grew rapidly into a $1 Billion enterprise with 1,500 stores and 15,000 employees. From this explosive expansion the article formally records the management blunders which in less than 2 years wiped out the organization. A ruinous acquisition, insular corporate culture, growing distance from its customer base, frequent management changes, and the death of a top executive are some of the factors that are recognized as contributing to the company’s downfall.
