Highlights of the changes made to the Third Edition are found in the following Fourth Edition chapters:

Chapter 1 Introduction to Information Systems in Business
This chapter includes new and revised material on the framework of IS knowledge needed by business end users, the ethical dimension of information technology, and success and failure with IT, all presented in Section I. An introduction to the internetworking of computing resulting from the shift from legacy systems to client/server and network computing has been added to Section II's revised coverage of key developments in the business use of information technology.
Chapter 2 Fundamentals of Information Systems
The model of IS components in Section I has been revised to include the role of network resources. The overview of the types and roles of information systems in Section II has been expanded to include enterprise collaboration systems and knowledge management systems.
Chapter 3 Solving Business Problems With Information Systems
New material on systems thinking has been added to the systems approach to problem solving in Section I. Section II contains new material on end user development, and additional material on the implementation stage of systems development moved from Chapter 14.
Chapter 4 Managerial Overview: Computer Hardware
Coverage of computer hardware has been extensively revised to emphasize the capabilities of computer systems and peripherals needed by business end users. In addition, some of the more technical material has been moved to a Technical Note in Section I.
Chapter 5 Managerial Overview: Computer Software
Updated and reorganized coverage of computer software, with new material on software suites, Web browsers, electronic mail, groupware, and more. Application software coverage has been moved to Section I, and system software moved to Section II.
Chapter 6 Managerial Overview: Telecommunications
This chapter includes many new and revised topics, such as business applications and trends in telecommunications, the Internet revolution, intranets, extranets, client/server, and other types of networks in Section I, and the updating of more technical topics including cellular phone systems, TCP/IP, and bandwidth and switching alternatives in Section II.
Chapter 7 Managerial Overview: Database Management
Includes updated and reorganized coverage of data warehouses, hypermedia Web databases, multidimensional and object-oriented data structures, and object/relational database management systems.
Chapter 8 The Internet and Electronic Commerce
Section I of this new chapter contains text material and business examples on the business use of the Internet including interactive marketing, push versus pull marketing, and the business value and customer value of the Internet. Section II introduces students to fundamental topics and business examples in electronic commerce, including EC technologies, retailing on the Web, supply chain management, EDI, EFT electronic payments alternatives.
Chapter 9 Intranets, Extranets, and Enterprise Collaboration
Section I of this new chapter reviews topics and business examples of the intranet revolution, including intranet applications and technologies, the role of extranets, and the future of intranets and extranets. Section II covers topics, tools, and examples of team, workgroup, and enterprise collaboration, including groupware tools for electronic communications, electronic conferencing, and cooperative work management.
Chapter 10 Information Systems for Business Operations
Section I is a major revision of material on IS support of the functional areas of business including the impact of Internet technologies and online services. Section II contains revised material on transaction processing systems.
Chapter 11 Information Systems for Managerial Decision Support
This is a major revision that includes revised coverage in Section I on management information systems, online analytical processing (OLAP), and decision support and executive information systems. Coverage of the functions and roles of management and the stages of decision making has been eliminated. Section II features revised and condensed coverage of artificial intelligence and expert systems, and new material on genetic algorithms, neural networks, and other AI topics formerly in Chapter 12. That chapter's coverage of human information processing has been dropped.
Chapter 12 Information Systems for Strategic Advantage
Section I of this chapter contains new and revised coverage of competitive strategy concepts. Section II contains revised coverage of the strategic use of IT for business, including the strategic use of the Internet, and new material on knowledge-creating companies and knowledge management systems.
Chapter 13 Managing IT: Enterprise and Global Management
Section I is a revision of managerial issues in IT including managing end user computing and Internet access. Section II contains revised material on global IT management, including cultural challenges and the Internet as a global IT platform.
Chapter 14 Managing IT: Planning and Implementing Change
Section I is a major revision of chapter coverage of information systems planning. Section II contains revised material on managing change and implementing new information technologies in an organization.
Chapter 15 Managing IT: Security and Ethical Challenges
Section I of this chapter contains new material on IS security and controls including fire walls and encryption methods. Section II contains new material on computer crime and privacy on the Internet, as well as revised coverage of ethical and societal IT issues.
Appendix A Real World Case Studies
This optional appendix contains five major case studies of computer using firms. All of the case studies are new to this edition.
Appendix B Tools for End User Analysis and Design
This optional appendix contains revised material on end user analysis and design tools, including the IS component matrix and a checklist for end user analysis and design, formerly in Chapters 2 and 3.
