You can read about:

Installation Types

There are seven different types of installations of Visual Statistics 2.0.

Single User Installation

This is the most common installation. It requires the Visual Statistics CD or a textbook CD that includes Visual Statistics (e.g., Bowerman, O’Connell, and Hand, 2/e). With this installation, the CD used to install Visual Statistics 2.0 must be in the computer for Visual Statistics to operate. See installation instructions below.

Instructor Installation

This installation is for statistics’ instructors only. It requires the Instructor’s CD-ROM of Visual Statistics 2.0. After running Visual Statistics it asks if you have adopted VS. If you answer yes, it asks 4 questions that are sent via the Internet to the authors. The message will not appear for 4 months (the next semester). If you answer, “Not Yet,” you can continue to use Visual Statistics, although the adoption question is asked after every use. See installation instructions below.

Download Installation

This installation is done one chapter at a time. First, you must download and install the Visual Statistics main menu (and all necessary operating system files). This program does not expire. Second, you download and install any chapter you wish to examine. Each chapter expires seven days after it is installed. Once a chapter is run, it cannot be reinstalled. If it is not run within the seven days after installation, you will be asked to reinstall the chapter before running it. This installation should not be done if you already have installed Visual Statistics 2.0 from a CD, since it will overwrite your previous installation. For updates and Beta downloads click here. See installation instructions below.

Demonstration Installation

This installation comes with many McGraw-Hill promotional CDs. It includes only 3 chapters (chapter 1, 7, and 8) of Visual Statistics. See installation instructions below.

Free Computer Lab Installation

This installation is free and is made from an Instructor’s CD-ROM of Visual Statistics 2.0. It is for student computer labs and requires that the student insert a Visual Statistics CD (or textbook CD containing VS) in the computer to run VS, unless the lab computer does NOT have a CD drive. If a student forgets his/her Visual Statistics CD, the lab may lend the student an original VS CD that has been purchased. To lend any student a copy of a Visual Statistics CD is a license violation. See installation instructions below.

Limited Network Installation

This installation eliminates the need for students to own Visual Statistics or to use their Visual Statistics CD in the computer lab. It is limited to 10 simultaneous users. Client computers run Visual Statistics from the server so that the restriction can be monitored. It costs $500, and is good for one year. The installation is made from an Instructor’s CD-ROM of Visual Statistics 2.0 after a serial code is obtained from the authors. See installation instructions below.

Unlimited Network Installation

This installation eliminates the need for students to own Visual Statistics or to use their Visual Statistics CD in the computer lab. It can be installed on an unlimited number of computers owned by the license holder. It costs $1000, and is good for one year. A client computer can either access VS from the server OR run Visual Statistics independent of the server. The installation is made from an Instructor’s CD-ROM of Visual Statistics 2.0 after a serial code is obtained from the authors. See installation instructions below.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Installing the Adobe Acrobat Reader

As part of the installation of Visual Statistics your computer will be searched for an Adobe Reader. If none is found, you will be asked if you want the Adobe 4.0 Reader installed. Answering YES will install the reader. If you choose NO, you MUST install an Adobe Reader before Visual Statistics will be fully operational. It can be installed later by executing the ar405en.exe file in the Reader folder located in the visual statistics 2.0 folder on the VS CD or by going to http://www.adobe.com.

If an Adobe Reader is found, the Adobe Reader installation will be halted. However, you should check the version number of your Adobe Reader. Although Visual Statistics will work with Adobe Reader versions before 4.0, the clarity of graphics improved considerably in version 4.0 and later. The 4.0 Reader can be installed by executing the ar405en.exe file in the Reader folder on the Visual Statistics CD, the Instructor’s CD, on a textbook CD containing Visual Statistics, or by going to http://www.adobe.com.

IMPORTANT Uninstall the earlier version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader before installing the new version since Adobe changed the location where it stores the reader. Uninstalling the earlier version after installing the 4.0 Reader may make the 4.0 Reader inoperable. (This warning is from Adobe).

Using the Adobe Reader

If you have not installed the Adobe Reader you will not be able to read the Visual Statistics Worktext and Solutions. When you are viewing a worktext chapter in the Adobe Reader, you can jump to different sections of the chapter by using the bookmarks on the left. You can print any portion of the chapter or the entire chapter by pressing the printer icon on the toolbar at the top of the page. You can also copy any page or portion or a page by pressing the text icon (a capital T), highlighting the text and copying the text (select Copy from Edit on the Menu Bar or press Ctrl-C). This enables you to paste a page into a word processor and type your answers in the space provided. Once you have opened a chapter’s worktext you can see the answers to the Learning Exercises by pressing the Show Solutions button.

Possible Installation Problems with the Adobe Reader

If you are using the NT or Windows 2000 operating system, Adobe has reported to us that the Adobe Reader installation fails sometimes. Adobe has found that this is usually due to the computer’s anti-virus software. They suggest disabling the anti-virus software and reinstalling the Adobe Reader. After the Reader installation is complete, the anti-virus software can be enabled.

If you have installed Acrobat 3.0x (e.g., Adobe Acrobat Exchange, Distiller, Reader, etc.) the Adobe 4.0 Reader installation will inform you that problems will occur with the 4.0 Reader if the 3.0x product is uninstalled after installing the 4.0 Reader. To remedy these problems the 4.0 Reader will have to be reinstalled. Therefore, it is recommended that any Adobe 3.0x product that you no longer need should be uninstalled before installing the Adobe Reader.

Installation Instructions

Single User Installation

Place your Visual Statistics CD or a textbook CD that includes Visual Statistics (e.g., Bowerman, O’Connell, and Hand, 2/e) in your CD drive.

The install program is Setup.exe in the Setup folder located in the Visual Statistics 2.0 folder. It can be executed in three ways. First, by double-clicking the file in your Windows Explorer (or from My Computer). Second, by typing d:\visual statistics 2.0\setup\setup.exe (where d: represents the drive letter for your CD reader) in Run in Start. Third, by using the Add/Remove Programs dialog box in the Windows Control Panel.

You will be asked to select the setup type. Select either COMPACT or COMPLETE. Both versions require the Visual Statistics installation CD to be in your computer for VS to operate.

COMPACT -- Installs only the main menu of Visual Statistics on your computer and the necessary system files. It takes up to 10MB of room on your hard drive or as much as 60MB LESS room than the COMPLETE installation.

COMPLETE -- Installs the entire Visual Statistics system on your computer. It takes up to 70 Mb of room on your hard drive or as much as 60 Mb more room than the COMPACT installation. However, on computers with older CD drives it runs faster.

Read the License Agreement during the install. It can also be read by selecting the Visual Statistics 2.0 folder in the Programs folder in Start (lower left corner on your Task Bar). Visual Statistics can be started from this folder or by double-clicking the VS icon that will be installed on your desktop. Once the system files have been installed on your computer, Visual Statistics can also be run directly from the CD by opening the VisualStatistics.exe file on the CD. This can be useful if your VS files have been corrupted and you want to run Visual Statistics without reinstalling VS.

Instructor Installation

Place your Instructor’s CD of Visual Statistics in your CD drive. The install program is Setup.exe in the Setup folder on this CD. It can be executed in three ways. First, by double-clicking the file in your Windows Explorer (or from My Computer). Second, by typing d:\setup\setup.exe (where d: represents the drive letter for your CD reader) in Run in Start. Three, by using the Add/Remove Programs dialog box in the Windows Control Panel. You will be asked to select the setup type. Select either INSTRUCTOR COMPACT or INSTRUCTOR COMPLETE.

INSTRUCTOR COMPACT - Installs the main menu of Visual Statistics on your computer and the necessary system files. To run VS you will need to put your Visual Statistics CD in your computer. It can take up to 10MB of room on your hard drive or 60 Mb less than the COMPLETE installation.

INSTRUCTOR COMPLETE - Installs the entire Visual Statistics system on your computer. It does NOT require your Visual Statistics CD to be in your computer to run Visual Statistics. It can take up to 70 Mb of room on your hard drive or as much as 60 Mb more room than the INSTRUCTOR COMPACT installation. However, on computers with older CD drives it runs faster.

Read the License Agreement during the install. At the end of the install you will be asked if you want to read the Adoption and Site License Information file. Either of the files can also be read by selecting the Visual Statistics 2.0 folder in the Programs folder in Start (lower left corner on your Task Bar).

Download Installation

1. If you don’t have the Adobe Acrobat 4.0 reader, it should be downloaded from Adobe and installed by executing the downloaded file. See:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

2. Download the Visual Statistics main menu (and all necessary operating system files). The file is 8.4 Mb and takes about 40 minutes to download using a 28.8 Kb modem.

3. Execute the downloaded exe file. This will install the Visual Statistics operating system and VS main menu. This program does not expire. During the install, you will be asked where to install Visual Statistics (we recommend C:\Program Files\Visual Statistics 2).

4. Download any chapter you wish to examine. Most chapters are under 1.4 Mb and take about 7 minutes to download with a 28.8 Kb modem.

5. Execute the download file. It will find where you have installed Visual Statistics 2.0 and install the necessary files for the current chapter. Each chapter expires seven (7) days after it is installed. Do not install the chapter until you are ready to use it!! Once a chapter is run, it cannot be reinstalled. If it is not run within the seven days after installation, you will be asked to reinstall the chapter before running it. If it is not run within the first three days of your license, it will be recommended that you reinstall the chapter before running it.

Demonstration Installation

Place your demonstration CD containing Visual Statistics in your CD drive. The install program is Setup.exe in the Setup folder in the Visual Statistics Demo folder on the CD. It can be executed in three ways: by double-clicking Setup.exe in your Windows Explorer (or My Computer), by using the Add/Remove Programs dialog box in the Windows Control Panel, or by typing
d:\Visual Statistics Demo\setup\setup.exe (where d: represents the drive letter for your CD reader) in Run in Start. The installation takes about 11Mb of hard drive disk space.

Free Computer Lab Installation

There are two types of installation depending if the computers in the computer lab have or do not have CD drives.

Typical Installation – Lab computers with a CD Drive should install the LAB COMPUTER TYPICAL - FREE installation type. Either run the installation from the Instructor’s CD or copy the Setup folder from the Instructor’s CD to a server and run the installation from the server. The entire Visual Statistics system will be installed in the folder of your choice (C:\Program Files\Visual Statistics 2 is recommended). A short cut will be put in the program folder you select (we recommend Visual Statistics 2.0) and on the desktop. The shortcut on the desktop can be deleted if it is inconsistent with your lab's operations. The student must insert a Visual Statistics CD (or tesxtbook CD containing Visual Statistics) into the CD drive in order to run Visual Statistics.

Special Installations - Lab computers that do not have a CD drive should install the LAB COMPUTER SPECIAL - FREE installation type. This can be done by copying the Setup folder on the Instructor’s CD to a server and running the installation for the client from the server. The entire Visual Statistics system will be installed in the folder of your choice (C:\Program Files\Visual Statistics 2 is recommended). A shortcut will be put in the program folder you select (we recommend Visual Statistics 2.0) and on the desktop. The shortcut on the desktop can be deleted if it is inconsistent with your computer lab's operations. Since the computer does not have a CD drive this version does not require a Visual Statistics CD. However, if this version is installed on a computer with a CD drive, the Visual Statistics CD is still required.

Limited Network Installation

To use this installation a Limited License must be purchased ($500). A Serial Code will be given to you upon payment. Client computers run Visual Statistics from the server. The server cannot run Visual Statistics since run-time software (OCXs and DLLS) is only installed on client computers.

Server - Install the LIMITED SERVER installation type on the server. When requested, type the Serial Code exactly as it was given to you including hyphens. All Visual Statistics files (but not run time OCXs or DLLs) will be installed at the destination you select on the server. No shortcuts will be created since Visual Statistics will NOT run on the server.

Clients - Install the LIMITED CLIENT installation type on each client. When prompted you can type the path to VisualStatistics.exe on the server or type the exact full path in a text file you create called VS.ini that is in the ROOT of the C: drive on the client computer. This file can be deleted after installation is complete. A shortcut to the server will be put in the program folder you select (we recommend Visual Statistics 2.0) and on the desktop. The shortcut on the desktop can be deleted if it is inconsistent with your lab's operations. The Visual Statistics 2 folder in the Program Files folder contains a limited number of files.

Unlimited Network Installation

To use this installation an Unlimited License must be purchased (costs price_site_unlimited_user ). A Serial Code will be given to you upon payment. Client computers can run Visual Statistics from the server or independently of the server (requiring about 60 Mb more disk space). The server cannot run Visual Statistics since run-time software (OCXs and DLLs) is only installed on client computers. An unlimited number of clients can run VS simultaneously.

Independent Client Installation - Install the UNLIMITED INDEPENDENT CLIENT installation type. When requested type the Serial Code exactly as it was given to you including hyphens. The entire Visual Statistics system will be installed in the Visual Statistics 2 folder in the Program Files folder on the client. A short cut will be put in the program folder you select (we recommend Visual Statistics 2.0) and on the desktop. The shortcut on the desktop can be deleted if it is inconsistent with your lab's operations.

Client Runs from Server Installation - First, install the UNLIMITED LICENSE SERVER installation type on your server. When requested, type the Serial Code exactly as it was given to you including hyphens. All Visual Statistics files (but not run time OCXs or DLLs) will be installed at the destination you select on the server. No shortcuts will be created since Visual Statistics will not run on the server.

Second, install the UNLIMITED LICENSE CLIENT on each client computer.

Uninstalling Visual Statistics

Visual Statistics can be uninstalled in either of two ways: (1) press the Start button and select Uninstall Visual Statistics 2.0 from the Visual Statistics 2.0 folder in the Programs folder, or (2) use the Add/Remove Programs dialog box in the Windows Control Panel. This uninstall will NOT uninstall the Adobe 4.0 Reader even if it was installed by the Visual Statistics installation program.

If you installed the Download version of Visual Statistics, the uninstall program will uninstall the Visual Statistics main menu, and every chapter you have installed. Although Visual Statistics 2.0 installations maybe installed over one another, it is generally good practice to uninstall programs before installing other versions. Only one version of Visual Statistics 2.0 can be installed on a computer. Finally, installing Visual Statistics 2.0 will not uninstall Visual Statistics 1.6 from you computer.
