The ICON Research Project

The ICON series grew out of an in-depth research project, sponsored by McGraw-Hill and undertaken by the Center for Teacher Education, Training and Research at the School for International Training. The objective of the research project was to determine how teachers use course books as they teach basic to low intermediate students in a range of classrooms around the world.

The project participants included experienced teacher trainers who were teaching and supervising teachers in secondary schools, universities and language centers around the world.

During the course of the project the participants analyzed how course books were used in their respective institutions and compared their findings with other participants in order to identify common patterns of activity in course book use.

The primary purpose of the research was to create a series that would support a wide variety of classroom situations allowing teachers flexibility while giving straightforward and highly accessible instruction. The end result of this project was the development of ICON.
