A Case Study on Bill M., Jr.

Directions

To determine your understanding of cardiovascular health and wellness, read the following case study and answer the accompanying questions.

Bill M. Jr. Is Bill M.'s son. He is a 16-year-old adolescent who is 5'9" tall, weighs 195 1b., and has the following history:

  • He has a family history of hear disease (see Assessment Activity 2-1).
  • He is 20 lb. overweight.
  • His total cholesterol level is 22056 mg/dl; HDL is 28 mg/dl.
  • His blood pressure is 140/85.
  • He regularly uses smokeless tobacco products.
  • He drinks five to six Classic Cokes per day.
  • He eats three to five meals per week at fast-food restaurants.
  • He does not like vegetables and eats only potatoes.
  • He occasionally plays pickup basketball.
Answer the following:
  1. What are his risk factors for coronary heart disease?
  2. What suggestions can you give him regarding his current diet?
  3. What suggestions can you give him about regular exercise?
  4. Bill Jr. says he is too young to be concerned about future health problems. How would you respond to this?
