How Does Your Self-Concept Compare with Your Idealized Self?

Below is a list of 15 personal attributes each portrayed on a 9-point continuum. Mark with an X where you think you rank on each attribute. Try to be candid and accurate; these marks will collectively describe a portion of your sense of self-concept. When you are finished with the above task, go back and circle where you wish you could be on each dimension. These marks describe your idealized self. Finally, in the spaces on the right, indicate the difference between your self-concept and your idealized self for each attribute.

To Carry This Further
  1. Overall, how would you describe the difference between your self-concept and your idealized self (large, moderate, small, large on a few dimensions)?
  2. How do sizable gaps for any of your attributes affect your sense of self-esteem?
  3. Do you think that any of the gaps exist because you have had others, ideals imposed on you or because you have thoughtlessly accepted others, ideals?
  4. Identify several attributes that you realistically believe can be changed to narrow the gap between your self-concept and your self-ideal and, thus foster a well-developed sense of self-esteem.
