Assessing Your Maximum Fat Intake
Directions: Complete the following steps to determine your estimated maximum fat intake in grams to stay within the dietary guidelines of 30% of total calories from fat.
- Enter your body weight _______ lb
- Multiply by 15: _______ x 15
- The result equals caloric intake for body weight (approximate number of calories consumed daily, assuming that you are not in a weight-loss or weight-gain program): _______ calories
- Multiply by 30%: _______ x .30
- The result equals maximum fat calories: _______ calories
- Divide by 9: _______ ÷ 9
- The result equals maximum fat in grams (Transfer this result to Assessment Activity 6-5, Part C, DRV column): _______ g
EXAMPLE: For an individual weighing 185 pounds:
- Body weight 185 lbs
- Multiply by 15: 185 x 15
- The result equals caloric intake for body weight (approximate number of calories consumed daily, assuming that you are not in a weight-loss or weight-gain program): 2775 calories
- Multiply by 30%: 2775 x .30
- The result equals maximum fat calories: 832.5 calories
- Divide by 9: 832 ÷ 9
- The result equals maximum fat in grams (Transfer this result to Assessment Activity 6-5, Part C, DRV column): 92.5 g
This amounts to approximately 3 ounces of saturated fat (92.5 ÷ 28 = 3.3 ounces).
