Fat Ratio of Foods

Directions: Select 10 foods and determine their percent fat (fat ratio) by completing the following table. (Two examples are provided.) You can select foods that were included in your 1-day assessment, your instructor may assign foods, or you may choose foods of interest.

  1. Determine calories and fat grams per serving. (Refer to label or to food tables in the appendix.)
  2. Determine fat calories by multiplying fat grams times 9. EXAMPLE: Star Kist Light Tuna = 0.5 g X 9 = 4.5 fat calories.
  3. Determine fat ratio by dividing fat calories by total calories per serving and multiplying by 100. EXAMPLE: Star Kist Light Tuna = 4.5 ÷ 60 = 0.075 X 100 = 7.5%.
  4. If fat percent (ratio) is less than 30%, indicate "yes" in the recommendation column; if more than 30%, indicate "no."
