For example, a person’s weight on a specific day can be written as an ordered pair in the form (day, weight). The population of a country for a specific year can be written as an ordered pair in the form (year, population). A tip applied to a meal can be written as an ordered pair in the form (cost of meal, amount of tip). Data that can be represented as an ordered pair is called paired data. When data is provided in tables, bar graphs, or line graphs, we can convert the data to ordered pairs and use them to plot the data. The plot of this data is called a scatter plot or scatter diagram. Scatter plots can be used to look for patterns or trends that occur in paired data. Note: When plotting data points, it is often necessary to determine an appropriate scale for the axes and to use appropriate minimum and maximum values on the axes.
