GRAPHING CALCULATOR SKILLS The graphing calculator can assist us in evaluating functions when the function is given in terms of an equation. Example: Find f (0) if f (x) = |x - 4|. Solution: Input the equation into the equation editor. Y= ATH ENTER X,T,u,n 2 4 ) ENTER Method 1: Use the TABLE feature to find the y-value. 2nd GRAPH From the table, we see that Y1 = 4 when x = 0, so f (0) = 4. Method 2: Graph the equation. Press TRACE. GRAPH TRA E The display at the bottom shows y = 4 at x = 0. So, f (0) = 4. Note: The initial value displayed for x when we press TRACE is x = 0. If we need to evaluate a function at a different value, then we enter this number and press ENTER. SECTION 3.3 EXERCISE SET Write About It! Use complete sentences in your answer to each exercise. 1. Is every relation a function? Explain. 2. Is every function a relation? Explain. 3. Explain the vertical line test. 4. What is function notation? Practice Makes Perfect! Determine if each relation is a function. If not, explain why.
