Study Strategies Taking Notes in Class Many college students take at least three or four classes a term and may attend almost a dozen classes a week. In this context, it isn’t realistic to try to remember everything that is said by an instructor in a particular class session. Hence, note-taking is essential to college success. In addition, taking notes helps process information, deepening your understanding. The strategies outlined below will help you take notes effectively, in this or in any class. • Find a seat that lets you see and hear the instructor clearly. • As you wait for the class to begin, review any assigned materials and your notes from the previous class. • Turn off your cell phone! • Plan to write your notes in a loose-leaf notepad, taking notes on only one side of the page. • Always bring your textbook, paper, and something to write with to class. For a math class, you may need to bring a calculator, too. • Listen actively. Think about what your instructor is saying, and ask questions about anything you don’t understand. • Focus on identifying and writing down key concepts, formulas, and insights. • Keep in mind that instructors often write down key pieces of information on the board. • Look over your notes as the class is fi nishing. Make sure you can read them and that they are thorough. (Use the emPOWERme checklist on page 214 to evaluate your notes in more detail.) • If something was discussed that you didn’t understand, plan to see your instructor during his or her offi ce hours or talk about the concept with a fellow student or math tutor. • Once the class is fi nished, read over your notes.
