CHAPTER Factoring Polynomials 7 Math at Work: Nurse Anesthetist Carl Burton plays an essential role in a team of medical professionals that performs surgery and other types of procedures. As a nurse anesthetist, he ensures that the patient is comfortable and pain-free during the procedure. “I try to imagine myself or a loved one on the operating table when I am doing my job,” Carl says. “I want them to enjoy the same safety and comfort that I would expect.” When asked what the most important aspects of his job are, Carl points to two areas in which he has excelled since college: math and people-skills. “A nurse anesthetist has to have a lot of math capability at his or her fi ngertips,” Carl describes. “Dosages need to be calculated and prepared, conversions need to be made between units, and patients’ vital signs need be constantly measured.” “As for people-skills,” Carl continues, “a team in an operating room should work together like a well-oiled machine. Everyone has to understand the information the other team-members need and be able to give it to them at the right time, and in a clear manner.” Carl was raised in a small rural town. It was not until he went to college that he was exposed to many different types of people and learned the skills of collaboration and communication that are so vital to his career today. In this chapter, we will cover the topic of factoring polynomials. We will also offer some advice on how to work effectively with your fellow students in the context of a study group. 353 OUTLINE Study Strategies: Working with a Study Group 7.1 The Greatest Common Factor and Factoring by Grouping 7.2 Factoring Trinomials 7.3 Special Factoring Techniques Putting It All Together 7.4 Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring 7.5 Applications of Quadratic Equations Group Activity emPOWERme: Switch “You” to “I”
