Study Strategies Making Academic Choices If you’re like most students, considering the list of courses available to you brings a range of emotions: anticipation over what you’ll learn; hope that the courses you choose will bring you closer to your dreams; fear that you won’t be able to do well; and excitement that you’re proceeding with your college career, taking another of the many small steps that will eventually add up to a complete journey through college. Choosing the right set of courses can be intimidating. If you approach the problem thoughtfully, though, your fi nal choices will make the best of the possibilities offered. Use the skills below to help you as you make your course decisions. • Familiarize yourself with how to access your college’s listing of courses. Usually the list can be found on the Web, but sometimes courses are included in an actual physical catalog. • Make an appointment to see your college advisor. He or she will be able to give you good advice on the ins and outs of your college’s requirements. • Make a complete list of the courses you need to take in order to graduate. If you are not sure which courses you have taken and which requirements you have already fulfi lled, get a copy of your transcript from the registrar. • Think carefully about how many terms you have left before graduation and how many required courses you still need to take. It’s never a good idea to leave all your requirements to the last term! • Draft a personal schedule for the term. Start with the required courses, then fi ll in any electives (that is, courses that you can choose to take). • Make sure your draft schedule does not confl ict with work or family obligations. • Complete the process by registering for classes. • When you receive your course schedule, look it over to confi rm that you are registered for the classes you signed up for. • Take a step back and think about where you are in your course of study. Are you accomplishing the larger goals you have for your academic career? Are you getting the most out of your college experience? 386 CHAPTER 7 Factoring Polynomials www.mhhe.com/messersmith
