Section 2.5 Order of Operations and Algebraic Expressions 115 Order of Operations and Algebraic Expressions Section 2.5 1. Order of Operations The order of operations was first introduced in Section 1.7. The order of operations also applies when simplifying expressions with integers. Applying the Order of Operations 1. First perform all operations inside parentheses and other grouping symbols. 2. Simplify expressions containing exponents, square roots, or absolute values. 3. Perform multiplication or division in the order that they appear from left to right. 4. Perform addition or subtraction in the order that they appear from left to right. Applying the Order of Operations Example 1 Simplify. Solution: 12 617 52 Simplify within parentheses first. Multiply before subtracting. Subtract.
