You can use a number line to find the sum of any pair of digits. The sums for all possible pairs of one-digit numbers should be memorized (see Exercise 7). Memorizing these basic addition facts will make it easier for you to add larger numbers. To add whole numbers with several digits, line up the numbers vertically by place value. But 13 ones is the same as 1 ten and 3 ones.We can carry 1 ten to the tens column while leaving the 3 ones in the ones column. Notice that we placed the carried digit above the tens column.
