General Career Information

What Color is Your Parachute: The Internet Guide
http://www.tenspeedpress.com/parachute/nfindexjhg.htm
Authored by Richard Nelson Bolles, who is known the world over as the author of the best-selling job-hunting book in history, "What Color Is Your Parachute?" This site contains links to gazillions of sites in five headings - Job Listings, Resumes, Career Counseling, Contacts and Research - that form the core of this guide.

The Riley Guide
http://www.dbm.com/jobguide/
This is a justly famous site on the Web. It's terrific, always has been, and since the beginning of 1998 is even more so, thanks to its creator, Margaret F. Dikel (formerly Margaret Riley). What you get here is a manageable index of the job-hunting resources on the Internet, well-organized, with extras like a wonderful summary of resume databases, and job-search guides. If I could only go to one gateway job site on the Web, this would certainly be it.

JobHunt: A Meta-list of Online Search Resources and Services
http://www.job-hunt.org/
This is another great site on the Web with a fine summary of what's available to the job hunter or career changer. It's a large index of online job-hunting resources, but it is well-organized and contains evaluations of each site's usefulness to the job hunter. I have found Dane Spearing's JobHunt very helpful, as would any job hunter or career changer.

Job Pointer
http://www.dog-ear.com
And now, something truly novel. Jeff Rios has built a software file of bookmarks for job hunters, together with a bookmark-manager program which you download through this site at no charge (it is shareware). Immediately, you have on your desktop * sitting outside of but operating within your favorite browser * at least 2,200 clickable bookmarks to job- hunting sites, organized by job location, fields, alternative work, beginning careers, company and employer indices, and seasonal jobs. Job Pointer then leads you directly to corresponding pages/search engines within job-hunting sites.
Job Pointer for Windows came out in late October 1998, and will be updated every month or so; once you download it you will get monthly e-mail notification of updates, and how to download them. Updates are also posted on this site.
There was a Mac version, 2.5, but it was discontinued as of 10/31/98; it required a utility made by another firm, and that firm turned their attention to other things. Too bad!

Internet Job Surfer
http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cdc/jobsurfer/
Maintained by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, this site has an impressive list of job-hunting resources - commercial organizations that have job databases, or resume listings or other services - all indexed alphabetically with links.

Career Resource Center
http://www.careers.org/index.html
Here we go "wide" (as they say in the film industry). What do I mean? Well, when it's 3 a.m., you can't sleep, you've tried all the obvious job-related stuff on the Net, and you're thinking "Is that all there is?" - this is the place to come. CRC claims over 7,500 links to jobs, employers, newspapers, Internet newsgroups, colleges, libraries, state employment offices, business, education and career service professionals on the Web, plus other career resources (including some in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom).

Gateways Maintained on Search Engine Sites
Some search engines or sites have their own index or "channel" of career and job-related sites on the Internet. These search engines function in fact almost as little career centers with career tips, advice, and so on.
