WWW Links-Chapter 12

Political Ordering of Space

As the chapter content indicates, the range of topics of political geographic interest is great. The number of websites addressing those interests is also large, and no more than a few can be suggested here. Most of those cited below are of research and study interest in themselves and have valuable links to other organizational home pages.

1. At the international level, the Official WEB Site Locator for the United Nations System at www.unsystem.org/ is of obvious interest. It is a catalog of UN system websites linking directly to agencies by title, by subject matter, and by a search program. Links to other international organizations are also provided.

Another good place to start locating international agency and foreign government information is at the University of Colorado at Boulder's Government Publications Library site. Tthe library's superb collection of links at the foreign country and international levels make it an indispensable reference tool. Follow its options through "Foreign Resources" at www-libraries.colorado.edu/ps/gov/for/foreign.htm and through "International Resources" at www-libraries.colorado.edu/ps/gov/int/internat.htm.

The World-Wide Web Virtual Library page on International Affairs Resources at www.etown.edu/home/selchewa/international_studies/firstpag.htm provides extensive links categorized by media source type, by organizations, by topics, and by regions and countries.

For information on more than 250 countries, check the current edition of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency's The World Factbook at www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/. It provides geographic, economic, demographic, governmental, and other data for each country for the latest year available. Similar those less extensive information is included through the "Explore" option on the Microstate Network page at microstate.net/. That leads to regional and country information worldwide, though of course not all of it is political geographic in content.

2. In addition to such general sites as those listed above, the Internet has a number of special topical and organization sites related to political geography. A few are cited below.

The United Nations Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea maintains a now older list of international organizations and institutions with those interests on its Oceans and Law of the Sea site at www.un.org/Depts/los/los-io.htm. Many of the organizations listed there still are operative; accessing their sites can further your research into the Law of the Sea topic.

Boundary-related links, an index of websites related to borders and territorial disputes, is sponsored by the International Boundaries Research Unit at Durham University at www-ibru.dur.ac.uk/.

The Swiss-maintained ISN International Relations and Security Network contains documents on current world affairs and a useful "links library" at www.isn.ethz.ch/.

Election Resources on the Internet at http://ElectionResources.org/ provides links to sites around the world detailing recent national and local election statistics.

3. A number of special-purpose and regional international organizations maintain Internet sites of political geographic interest. Only a few can be detailed here.

The World Trade Organization, established in 1995, is the principal agency of the world's multilateral trading system. Its home page includes access to documents discussing international conferences and agreements, reviewing its own publications, and summarizing the current state of world trade. Its site is found at http://www.wto.org/

Europa at www.europa.eu.int/index-en.htm is the European Union's page, accessing basic information on the EU and its constituent institutions, texts of official documents and publications, and current European Union news and statistics. The Council of Europe site at www.coe.fr/index.asp has similar subpages to its activities, official texts, and current news releases. Other international organizations have their respective web sites: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (www.asean.or.id) and Organization of American States (www.oas.org) are examples.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization maintains its official home page at www.nato.int/ with subsites on Nato's structure, documents and library, activities, and links to other international relations sites.

4. On the Anglo American scene, most United States and Canadian government agencies have their own home pages and, usually, search engines for their own activities and publications and links to related agencies and organizations.

The United States' FedWorld Information Network helps in locating federal government information online. It can be accessed at www.fedworld.gov/. The Department of State Foreign Affairs Network (DOSFAN) maintained by the University of Illinois at Chicago is an indispensable site for research into U.S. foreign policy. Its Electronic Research Collection, including principally archived electronic documents of the State Department and Arms Control and Disarmament Agency may be accessed at http://dosfan.lib.uic.edu/ERC/index.html.

The University of Colorado Libraries site (see above) also provides extensive links to United States state government and municipality resources and pages through www-libraries.colorado.edu/ps/gov/st/allstate.htm. Specialized sites on specific topics, such as redistricting sites at www.geog.buffalo.edu/ucgis/UTopic_redistrict.htmlor the Census Bureau's 2000 Redistricting Data Program at www.census.gov/clo/www/redistricting.html are also available.

The Government of Canada Internet Addresses site at http://canada.gc.ca/directories/internet_e.html provides an alphabetical list of all departments and agencies of the national government and links to their websites. A categorized Canadian Government Information on the Internet site at http://dsp-psd.pwgsc.gc.ca/dsp-psd/Reference/cgii_index-e.html gives more direct access to federal subject matter sites and to provincial and municipal information.

Finally, the Association of American Geographers' Political Geography Specialty Group Homepage at http://garnet.acns.fsu.edu/~dpurcell/pgsg1.html gives access to the group's current newsletter and links to other sites of political geography interest.
