Much of this data was obtained through research funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to the importance of soil as an agricultural resource.

Iowa State University hosts the National Soil Data Access Facility of the USDA which allows access to information from various national soils databases. This site also features photographic images of different soil types for comparison.

The Soil Information for Environmental Modeling web site at Penn State University's Earth System Science Center also provides access to various soils databases.

Iowa State University also hosts the Soil Quality Institute of the USDA which provides information about soil quality issues in the United States. Information is provided about a low-tech method of testing soil quality by simply digging a hole with a shovel.
