Chapter 2 Web-Based Questions

2-19 Web-based Question

Different Geographical Areas and Outputs—Japan and the United States Compared to the United States Japan has 4 percent of the geographical area (slightly smaller than California) and 47 percent of the population (1996 estimates). Other things equal Japan should have far less than 47 percent of the U.S. output. Visit the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) http://www.oecd. org/std/gdp.htm and calculate the ratio of Japan’s gross domestic product (a measure of national output) to the gross domestic product of the United States. Is the ratio above or below 47 percent? What might explain this difference?
