Inflation and the "Official CPI" Each month BLS releases thousands of detailed CPI numbers to the press. However the press generally focuses on the broadest most comprehensive CPI called the official CPI. Go to the U.S. Department of Labor http://stats.bls.gov/cpifaq.htm CPI FAQs (frequently asked questions) page. Which index is the official CPI reported in the media? Look at http://stats.bls.gov/news.release/ cpi.toc.htm and find the current figures for the official CPI: (a) index level (for example July 1992 5 140.5); (b) 12-month percentage change (for example July 1991 to July 1992 5 3.2 percent); (c) 1-month percentage change on a seasonally adjusted basis (for example from June 1992 to July 1992 5 0.1 percent); and (d) the annual percentage rate of change so far this year.
