How Much Family Income Does It Take to Be in the Top 5 Percent? The U.S. Census Bureau provides information on the historical distribution of family income via http://www.census.gov/hhes/histinc/f01.html. What is the lower limit of family income for the top 5 percent of families in the most recent year listed? Do the historical data in the table suggest that the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer in absolute terms? Use http://www.census.gov/hhes/histinc/f02.html to determine whether the relative income share of the top 5 percent of families has increased in the past decade.

Is Poverty on the Rise? The U.S. Census Bureau http://www.census.gov/hhes/poverty.html also compiles information about poverty in the United States. Use that site to answer the following questions: (a) Is the number of people living below the official government poverty level higher or lower than in the previous year reported? Compared to a decade earlier? (b) Is the poverty rate (in percent) higher or lower than the previous year for the general population children under 18 blacks Asians Pacific Islanders and whites? (c) How many states had increases in the poverty rate compared to the previous year?
