  1. Web-Based Question: How much family income does it take to be in the richest 5 percent? The U.S. Census Bureau provides information on the historical distribution of family income at www.census.gov/hhes/histinc/f01.html. What is the lower limit of family income for the richest 5 percent of families in the most recent year listed? Do the historical data in the table suggest that the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer in absolute terms? Use the data at www.census.gov/hhes/histinc/f02.html to determine whether the relative income share of the richest 5 percent of families has increased in the past decade.


  2. Web-Based Question: Is poverty on the rise or on the decline? The U.S. Census Bureau compiles information about poverty in the United States. Use the data at www.census.gov/hhes/poverty.html to answer the following questions:

    a.Is the number of people living below the official government poverty level higher or lower than it was in the preceding year? Than it was a decade earlier?

    b.Is the poverty rate (in percent) higher or lower than it was in the preceding year for the general population, children under 18, blacks, Asians, Pacific Islanders, and whites?

    c.How many states had increases in the poverty rate compared to the preceding year?
